Doctor in India managed to draw out the worms live along the 13 cm from the eyes of a patient who complained of persistent pain.
When the doctor V. Seetharahman examining patients P.K. Krishnamurthy with the age of 75 years at Fortis Hospital in Mumbai this week, the ophthalmologist was surprised to see there are parasitic creatures that squirm. He decided to operate immediately to remove the worms before other injuries occur.
"The worm wriggling under konjunktiva," said Seetharahman told AFP. Konjunktiva is a thin membrane that lines the eye. "This is the first time in 30 years I have seen a case like this."
For two weeks, Krishnamurthy suffer irritation and red eye before the doctor sees the creature as thin as a thread under the microscope on Wednesday.
"He was also confused and disturbed," said Seetharahman.
The specialist is then issued a 13 cm long worm with a slightly open konjunktiva the patient. Operation for 15 minutes is seen directly by the patient's wife who fears, Saraswati.
"Worm is constantly moving and jumping, I was scared," she said to Mumbai Mirror.
After being appointed, the worm was alive for 30 minutes after surgery, and then sent to the hospital's microbiology for identification.
Seetharahman previously heard about 2-3 cm long worm removed from the eye. "It might be a record," he said.
According to him, this worm can enter the patient's body from a wound in the leg or from eating raw or cooked is not perfect, then enter the blood stream, and ends in the eye.
"If the worm is not immediately removed, he could get into the layers of the eye and cause loss of penghilatan. Could enter the brain and cause major problems in the nervous system," added Seetharahman.
Doctors S. Narayani, the hospital's medical director, agrees that this is a rare case. "Our ophtalmologi Department is very active and we have never seen a case like this in the last 10 years."
